I bought my Marmot Precip Jacket several years ago, and it was the first time I ever owned a Marmot product. Despite the tough conditions I’ve put it through, it still looks like new!
As discussed in the Hiking Lady Layering article, I always hike with an Outerlayer. Why? Because it is lightweight, but offers lots of protection from the elements. Those summer thundershowers always seem to surprise me!
What I particularly like about the Marmot PreCip rain jacket is that it has a stowable hood that rolls up nicely at the collar, has easy access pit vents (which you can use to cool off without taking off the whole jacket), it very lightweight and can be packed down to a very small size (I stuff mine in my pack’s side pocket for easy access), and the material is called “DryTouch” and prevents you from feeling hot and clammy in humid conditions. I don’t know how the DryTouch technology works, but I swear it is really nice, especially in humid conditions.

Interesting... the bloke in Back Country in Ilkley was raving to me about it to today. I asked if they had any of the old Oz tops and he said no, but they had the new ones. He then went on to say that he wouldn't bother with that though as the Marmot is just as waterproof and way more breathable. They're selling the Haglofs for £200 and the Marmot for £120, so I took his chat at face value as I'd guess you'd expect shop folk to try sell you the most expensive item usually. That said, I think the Marmot's every so slightly heavier and their fabric's probably not as hard-wearing.

We think the Marmot Genesis jacket is great and so do Fall-Line ski magazine. The Genesis is a soft shell jacket with taped seams so it’s waterproof, very strong and durable plus looks like a normal jacket rather than a traditional waterproof that you can wear everyday.
Here is what Fall-Line say – ‘Here’s one of those jackets that’ll suit folk who like superlight kit but want a modicum of warmth as part of the deal. Lined softshell feels really good to wear at any time of year because it doesn’t have that high-tech rustle of regular outer shell. Yet it still does pretty well everything a top end jacket will do at a lower price.
Originally designed to be fully waterproof, but there is a tiny area where water can get in at the top of the main pocket zips so it doesn’t qualify. I had to ask Marmot for that info, since I couldn’t find out why it wasn’t rated as such after it survived a good rolling. The spec is high, stretch, microfleece lined, seam welded and highly breathable thanks to Marmot’s tropo membrane laminate. Super comfortable neck area and great elastcated hood closures which make for a good close fit. The lack of snowskirt fails to put me off as I’m the sort of old ponce who wears high waisted trousers. Marmot DriClime Catalyst Jacket

I got turned onto the Marmot DriClime Catalyst Jacket  last year when I was winter backpacking in the White Mountains. Several very experienced hikers on our trip had the DriClime Catalyst and they raved about it. So when I saw it on sale a few months ago, I snatched it up.

My plan is to mainly use the Catalyst Jacket for winter hiking and backpacking, so I can replace two other garments, my Gore-tex rain shell and a Polarguard vest which I cobbled together last year to serve the same purpose. The problem with that system was that I sweated underneath it when I had to wear a pack and snowshoe at the same time, which is most of the time, in these parts.

Whenever you carry a backpack in winter, sweat accumulates on your back under your pack. What you need is a layering system that will wick that moisture away from your skin because you burn extra calories to evaporate moisture if it is touching your body. That's one reason why you get so run down in winter during active sports.

What I like best about the DriClime Catalyst Jacket is it's wicking liner, which is a thin, gossamer material that lines the entire jacket, including the arms and collar. It's soft to the touch, but very porous, so it can transport sweat to the outer layer of the jacket where it can evaporate.

I tested the jacket's wicking capabilities this past weekend by carrying a full pack on a 10 mile hike for 6 hours and 2,750 ft of elevation gain in 40 F temperatures, dropping to freezing above treeline. I stopped frequently to check whether the inside of the jacket's lining felt wet and was amazed that it wasn't.

Weight-wise the jacket is 14.9 oz in an XL, saving me a few ounces of gear weight and a little backpack space. In addition to the liner, it has a good DWR to keep me dry in light rain and mist, two lined zippered pockets, a lined collar, and a zippered chest pocket large enough to store a hat or map.The external fabric is polyester with stretchy panels along the side of the jacket, along the underside of the arms, and up the sides of the back. These help eliminate extra fabric and make the jacked more form-fitting for active use, but don't make it a tight fit. At most, I will wear two Capilene 1 jerseys under it, and since these are thin, I still have plenty of space and freedom of movement.

For $110, I feel that this jacket is a good buy and I'm looking forward to living in it this winter.

2011 Marmot Shadow Jacket Cilantro Fatigue Color

I purchased this jacket in Salt Lake City over the New Years 2010/11 weekend. I had the Marmot Vertical Jacket and it was a little bit of a funky fit, not very true to size and the weekend was a VERY cold weekend at the ski hills. Park City was at -2 degrees on Friday and the Vertical jacket with layers wasn't cutting it, so I set out to find a better jacket. I'm glad I found this jacket! It kept me toasty warm all weekend with the 650 fill down layer. I found myself at The Canyons on Monday venting the jacket's pit zips and unzipping on the lift rides. This wasn't because it was too warm during the day, I kept my pant vents closed all day, this jacket was just that warm! I removed my mid layer fleece and had only a base layer and the jacket on and I was good to go all day.

The pockets are numerous including a media pocket inside, but I do wish some of the pockets were a little larger. I also noticed that my gloves are a bit of a tough fit under the wrist cuffs. I have a pair of gloves that don't have a gaitor and the wrist cuffs barely fit over them, they are fine when you first put the jacket on by putting your gloves on then the jacket, but on the hill it is a little bit of a PITA.

All around, I used this jacket for during an unusual cold snap in the Wasatch and it exceeded my expectations. I do wonder if it may be too warm for those "normal" temp days on the hill, but thus far this jacket has been great!

Ever since I got the Marmot Super Hero Jacket, I've worn it every day on the hill, and quite often off the hill. I've gotten more compliments on the jacket than on any item of skiwear I've ever owned (except maybe my neon green Obermeyer pants, but that's another story), and it's by far one of the most practical pieces I've ever had. It was reliable in every way 鈥� except that it was unbreathable and butt-ugly. This Super Hero jacket has all the qualities of a keeper 鈥� and it looks great to boot.
